First: The Visa
Your Ticket to France

Thinking of working in France? You’ll need two things: a visa and a work permit. Think of it as your golden ticket and backstage pass to French life. Good news for EU citizens: you can skip the visa part! For everyone else, let’s break it down.

A visa is a sticker in your passport that says, "Bienvenue!" and lets you stay in France for a specific time. Not all visas are created equal, and we’ll focus on two of them.

Long-Stay Visa
(Type D)

This one’s the real MVP if you’re planning to stay in France for 4 months to a year. Bonus? It also gives you access to the entire Schengen area for up to 90 days—no extra visas needed.

Some of these visas are VLS-TS (Long-Stay Visa Equivalent to a Residence Permit). Fancy, right? This means no need to queue up at the prefecture to get a residence permit immediately. But—and this is key—you must validate your VLS-TS online within three months of arrival, pay a fee, and voilà, you’re officially regularized and free to cross Schengen borders again.

Visa with “Residence Permit to Be Requested within 2 Months” Mention

This one comes with homework. It gets you into France but asks you to apply for a residence permit at the prefecture within two months. Depending on your situation, you could get:

  • A one-year, multi-year, or even a ten-year residence permit.
  • Specific categories include:
    • Family of a French citizen (think children, parents, or grandparents financially dependent on a French national).
    • Independent professionals (like artisans or shopkeepers).
    • Workers (talent passports, EU blue cards, seasonal jobs, or being part of a worker’s family).
    • Artists (because who wouldn’t want to create under the Parisian sky?).

What Happens When the Long-Stay Visa Runs Out?

Want to extend your French adventure? No problem. Just file for a residence permit two months before your visa expires. Head to the prefecture or sub-prefecture near your home, and they’ll sort you out.

So, there you have it! A mix of rules and red tape, but hey, it’s worth it for those croissants and a stroll along the Seine. France awaits, paperwork and all! 🥐✨

What do you think? Ready to pack your bags? 😊
